More and more Calgarians are choosing to commute by bike. As a driver, it’s important that you do your part to help ensure their safety. Here are six tips for safely sharing the road with cyclists.
- Leave cyclists ample space.
Cyclists are much more vulnerable than drivers. And not all riders are proficient; they may swerve, brake suddenly or fall, especially if they encounter an obstacle such as debris or a pothole. Giving cyclists enough space is crucial to ensuring their safety.
As of September 1, 2019, there is a bylaw in Calgary around minimum safe passing distance. Drivers are required to leave 1 metre of distance when passing a cyclist at 60 kilometres per hour or slower, and 1.5 metres of distance when passing at more than 60 kilometres per hour.
- Check your blind spot before turning right.
Cyclists can be easy to miss when coming up alongside your vehicle. Check your blind spot before turning and yield to any cyclists.
- Stay out of bike lanes.
Never stop or park in a bike lane, even if it’s just for a moment. Blocking a bike lane forces cyclists to merge into traffic, increasing the risk of an accident.
- Be careful opening your door.
Before opening your car door, always check your side-view mirror and do a shoulder check to make sure that no cyclists are passing. Do the same when pulling out from a curb.
- Try to avoid honking around cyclists.
If there are cyclists near your car, you should only use your horn when strictly necessary. The sound of a horn can be startling for cyclists and cause them to swerve, lose control or react unpredictably.
- Be cautious at stop signs.
Even though it’s illegal, cyclists sometimes ride through stop signs to avoid having to stop. Even if you have the right of way, exercise caution at stop signs. If you’re letting a cyclist go before you, communicate this clearly by making eye contact with the cyclist and using a hand gesture.
