The Importance of Farm Insurance in Alberta

The TSG Insurance Team is proud to offer Albertans specialized farm and ranch insurance that makes purchasing simple. We offer broad coverage at the most competitive rates for a host of needs including: your farm home; personal contents like antiques; farm buildings, automobiles, and equipment including contents and tools; livestock (including leaf cutter bees) and custom farming; as well as your commercial operations – protecting you from fraud, crime, or employee dishonesty, third-party losses, and business income replacement due to losses caused by an insured peril.

In Alberta, this is becoming increasingly important as the provincial government works to bring in new workplace safety rules under Bill 6, the Increased Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act, which makes Worker Compensation Board coverage mandatory for the agricultural sector.

According to a November 2015 CBC News article, the “rules would apply to all farm and ranch workers, whether they are paid or not. Occupational Health and Safety legislation already applies to all other industries in the Alberta.”

The article also notes that in 2014, 25 people died on farms in Alberta, but the statistics are incomplete because accidents don’t need to be reported, and investigations aren’t launched. Currently, less than five per cent of the province’s 40,000 farms and ranches carry the coverage. For full-time employee earning $50,000 a year, it can cost anywhere between $850 and $1,450. The government plans to develop detailed occupational health and safety rules for farms and ranches by 2017.

A Huffington Post article of that same period notes that Alberta “is currently the only jurisdiction in Canada without employment standards coverage for farm and ranch workers.” Alberta is one of four provinces without WCB coverage for farmers. The others are Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Prince Edward Island.

The reality is that farms and farmers need to minimize risk to enjoy good profits, and no one understands that better than farmers themselves. A good place to start is be examining your liability coverage, followed closely by property insurance.
